Miramar, FL - Authorities say a Miramar High School student was taken into custody Monday morning after allegedly bringing an unloaded firearm onto campus.
According to Miramar Police, school security discovered the weapon after a metal detector was triggered at the school’s entrance on Southwest 89th Avenue.
Officers confirmed the student had no ammunition in their possession when the gun was found.
The school’s security team immediately intervened after the metal detector alert, locating the unloaded firearm during a search of the student.
Law enforcement was called to the scene, and the student was arrested without incident.
Officials have not released the student’s name or age, and no specific charges have been announced as of Monday afternoon.
In a statement to parents, Principal Winfred Porter stressed that no threats were made against students, staff, or the campus during the incident.
He reassured families that safety protocols were effectively followed and emphasized that the student would face "appropriate school disciplinary measures."
Porter also urged parents to speak with their children about the serious consequences of bringing weapons or banned items onto school property.
Miramar Police are continuing their investigation into how the student allegedly came into possession of the firearm.
Broward County Public Schools officials confirmed that school operations continued normally after the situation was handled.
Authorities are reminding the public that any student caught with a weapon on school grounds, even without ammunition or direct threats, can face serious legal and disciplinary actions.
