Loren LoRosa sits down with Ashley Allison, owner of The Root and CNN political commentator, for a powerful conversation about ownership, purpose, and knowing your worth. Ashley opens up about the journey to acquiring one of the most influential Black media platforms, the pressure of being a Black woman in media, and why protecting your peace is just as important as chasing success.

From building generational wealth and navigating the changing media landscape to overcoming rock bottom and learning to move without apology, Loren and Ashley get real about what it takes to build something of your own while staying true to yourself. Plus, Ashley shares what's next for The Root and why she's just getting started.

Just one day before the midterms, eight Black candidates are running for governor, including Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia and Byron Donalds in Florida. Only three Black governors have ever been elected in U.S. history.  Mimi Brown breaks down the races that could change that.

The Black Effect Presents... Effective Immediately!

In this episode of Effective Immediately, DJ Hed and Gina Views welcome The Drop: A Snowfall Saga creator and showrunner Malcolm Spellman, writer-producer Emil Pinnock, and producer-consultant Jimmy "Jim Bob" Crest for an exclusive behind-the-scenes conversation about expanding the Snowfall universe. The team reflects on the pressure of honoring John Singleton's vision, the nearly three-year journey to bring The Drop to life, and the show's international reach across FX, Hulu, and Disney+. They also recognize director Rashidi Harper while discussing their mission to create an unapologetically Black love letter to Los Angeles, rooted in authentic West Coast hip-hop culture, neighborhood storytelling, music, and community casting.

The conversation explores the creative decisions behind The Drop, from building a collaborative writers' room and avoiding exploitative depictions of Black trauma to developing layered characters that challenge audience expectations. Malcolm and the team address the backlash surrounding Lamar, explaining how his characterization reflects being on the autism spectrum in 1991 and teasing his continued evolution. They also offer insight into Dara and Leon's relationship, DJ Block's backstory, and the possibility of future seasons, spin-offs, and new stories within the John Singleton universe.

The Black Effect Presents... Bloodline Crimes!

When identical twins Shamaiya Hall and Troyshaye Hall were each accused in separate knife attacks of murdering their own children, their shared history of violence and the failures of child-protection systems forced a small community to confront unsettling questions about mental illness, accountability, and whether violent behavior can run in a family.
