21 SAVAGE: Absence Looms OverGrammys

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • Before the awards, Post made an Instagram call to action to raise awareness about 21ā€™s situation. That made a lot of folks think he was going to do more.
  • Even if he has opposing political views, he should have stood in solidarity with his collaborator.Ā
  • The pictures of him wearing the shirt backstage make me wonder if he planned to reveal it on the air and wound up getting cold feet.Ā
  • Maybe it was under his jacket but the zipper got stuck.Ā

A week after the Atlanta rapper was arrested by ICE, his ā€œRockstarā€ collaborator didnā€™t even make reference to him on stage. Post Malone didnā€™t say a thing during his five minutes of airtime on Musicā€™s Biggest Night. He apparently wore a ā€œFree 21 Savageā€ t-shirt backstage, which was only seen in pictures after the fact.Ā

When Swedish musician Ludwig Gorranns son accepted the Record of the Year award on Childish Gambino ā€™s behalf, he was the first to address Savageā€™s situation on air. The camera cut to Posty who was sitting in the crowd, clapping.

According to Savageā€™s co-manager, Grammys producers refused to release tickets to Savageā€™s mom so she could attend the awards on his behalf. Thatā€™s extra awkward considering producers apparently flew Mac Miller ā€™s parents outĀ to be in the crowd. Still, Meezy wrote, ā€œI wonā€™t blame this on raceā€¦ I blame it on lame people being LAME.ā€

Before the show, demonstrators outside the Staples Center made aĀ statement by holding up poster boards spelling out ā€œFree 21 Savage.ā€Ā
