Juice WRLD's Mother Opens Up About Her Son's Death For The First Time

It's almost been a year since Juice WRLD passed away at just 21 years old following an accidental overdose. Now, the rapper's mother, Carmela Wallace, is speaking out about her son's death and struggle with addiction and mental health for the first time.

In a new interview with ABC 7 Chicago, Carmela explained that although her son's death was "devastating," she didn't want to "hide the fact that he died from a drug overdose," adding, "I did not want to keep that secret because it's a lot of people who deal with that every day."

Juice WRLD, real name Jarad Anthony Higgins, passed away after suffering a seizer following the accidental overdose of codeine and oxycodone, and Wallace explained that she and her son would talk about his struggle with addiction and his mental health. She recalled, "We talked about his struggles, and I said, 'If you have anxiety, then you need to get medicated properly for it.' You know, instead of medicating yourself, I talked to him about it. I told him my biggest fear was him overdosing on this stuff. And that's why I made the decision. I have to talk about it with other people. I can't just keep that as a secret."

Recently, Carmela founded Live Free 999, which is "aimed at helping other young people who are dealing with mental health issues and drug addiction." She added, "That's our objective with our foundation to normalize the conversation. So ,it has to start with me ... I hope it's what he wanted. You know, a legacy of healing to let people know that you don't have to suffer alone."
